  18. <p>     The centerpiece of the Royal Ballet's current U.S. tour is a
  19. production of SWAN LAKE that in most respects is a genial mess.
  20. In the famous "white act," the enchanted maidens dance around in
  21. what appears to be silvery decor left over from their Christmas
  22. party, all tinsel and discarded trees. But the company does have
  23. a genuine Swan Queen: the bewitching French ballerina SYLVIE
  24. GUILLEM. At 26, she is the reigning star of international
  25. ballet, and it is easy to see why. Tall and leggy, she seems to
  26. have double-jointed hips--her ordinary kick is stopped only
  27. by her ear. Onstage she seems radiantly alone. This Swan Queen
  28. may be the Prince's fantasy; she mostly ignores him and
  29. certainly does not need him to enact her own doomed fate.
  30. Guillem holds the stage with mesmeric authority. No romance for
  31. her, Tchaikovsky notwithstanding. Guillem is a modern heroine
  32. who could perform the role persuasively in a leotard. In fact,
  33. theater artist Robert Wilson is only semi spoofing when he talks
  34. of a Swan Lake in which she would play all the roles. She could
  35. too, right down to the tipsy tutor.
